Hello New Berlin pet owners!
As we head into the warm and sunny days of June, it’s important to remember that the summer months come with their own set of challenges and opportunities for our furry friends. At New Berlin Veterinary Clinic, we’re here to help you ensure your pets stay healthy, happy, and safe throughout the season. Here are some essential tips and advice to keep in mind.
Stay Hydrated: Just like humans, pets need plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months. Make sure your pets have access to fresh, clean water at all times. Consider carrying a portable water bowl when you go for walks or outings.
Avoid Overheating: Pets can easily overheat, particularly dogs and cats with thick fur. Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day; early morning or late evening walks are best. Never leave your pet in a parked car, as temperatures can rise dangerously high within minutes.
Protect Their Paws: Pavement and sand can become extremely hot and burn your pet’s paws. To check if the ground is too hot, place your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Walking on grass or using protective booties can help prevent burns.
Watch Out for Parasites: Summer is peak season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These pests can carry diseases that are harmful to your pets. Ensure your pets are up-to-date on their flea, tick, and heartworm prevention medications. Regularly check your pets for ticks after they’ve been outside.
Groom Regularly: Regular grooming helps keep your pet cool and reduces the risk of skin infections. For dogs with longer coats, a trim can help them stay cooler. However, avoid shaving your pet’s coat entirely, as their fur also provides protection from the sun.
Be Cautious with Summer Foods: Summer gatherings often involve delicious food, but many human foods can be harmful to pets. Keep alcoholic beverages, chocolate, grapes, onions, and other toxic foods out of reach. If you’re having a barbecue, make sure pets don’t get too close to the grill.
Water Safety: If you’re spending time near water, supervise your pets just as you would children. Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Consider investing in a pet life jacket if you’re going boating or if your pet isn’t a strong swimmer.
Fireworks and Loud Noises: Many pets are scared by fireworks and loud noises. Keep pets indoors during fireworks displays and provide a safe, quiet space for them to retreat to. If your pet is particularly anxious, consult with us about possible anxiety treatments.
Travel Safely: If you’re planning a summer trip and bringing your pet along, make sure they are comfortable and secure during travel. Use a well-ventilated carrier or crate and never let pets ride unrestrained in the back of a truck or in a car with the windows down.
Schedule a Check-Up: Finally, consider scheduling a summer wellness check-up for your pet. Regular veterinary visits help ensure your pet is in good health and allow us to catch any potential issues early.
At New Berlin Veterinary Clinic, we’re dedicated to keeping your pets healthy all year round. If you have any concerns or need advice on summer pet care, don’t hesitate to contact us. Have a wonderful and safe summer with your furry companions!
